No plans to recognize Taliban as legitimate government of Afghanistan: PM Justin Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that his government has no plans to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. “Canada has no plans to recognize the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan. When they were in government 20 years ago, Canada did not recognize them,” Trudeau said, according to Xinhua news agency.
“Our focus right now is on getting people out of Afghanistan and the Taliban need to ensure people have free access to the airport,” he said on Tuesday. As part of what Canada can do to stabilize the situation, protect civilians and end violence, this includes leading Afghans to safety in Canada.” Two planes carrying diplomats, soldiers and Afghans from Kabul landed in Canada on Monday night.
On Tuesday morning, Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that a flight had landed in Toronto carrying Afghans who were eligible to come to Canada as part of the government’s recently announced special immigration measures for former interpreters and embassy staff, who had helped Canadians in Afghanistan. The second flight landed in Ottawa and involved personnel returning from the Canadian embassy in Kabul.
