Amidst the havoc of the Taliban in Afghanistan, now the capital Kabul is also seen slipping from the hands of the government. Three Afghan officials said the Taliban had reached the outskirts of the capital, Kabul. The Taliban captured Jalalabad this morning, after which the threat to Kabul had increased.
Afghan officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that at present there is no conflict in the region. Taliban fighters had entered Kalakan, Karabagh and Paghman districts. However, the Taliban has not yet announced the occupation of Kabul. However, government offices suddenly started sending their employees home early on Sunday after helicopters took off.
Earlier on Sunday, the Taliban captured Jalalabad, the last major city outside Kabul. After the departure of Jalalabad, apart from Kabul, there are only 6 provincial capitals of the country, which are not occupied by Kabul. There are 34 provinces in Afghanistan.
Earlier on Sunday morning, the Taliban released some pictures online in which its men can be seen in the governor’s office in Jalalabad, capital of Nangarhar province. The province’s MP Abarullah Murad told the Associated Press that extremists had captured Jalalabad. The Taliban took control of large parts of Afghanistan in the last week, after which the pressure on the central government of Afghanistan has increased.
Afghanistan’s fourth-largest city, Mazar-e-Sharif, was captured by the Taliban after an all-out attack on Saturday, with the Taliban taking control of the entire northern Afghanistan. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said on Saturday that he would not let 20 years of “achievements” go to waste. He added that “deliberations are on” amid the Taliban attack. He addressed the nation through television on Saturday. This is his first public remarks since the Taliban seized key areas in recent days.
On the other hand, America, Britain and Canada have sent troops to help their diplomatic staff present there. US President Joe Biden has ordered the deployment of 5,000 forces to the war-torn country to ensure the orderly and safe withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan.
