The Minneapolis Municipal Administration has agreed to pay $ 27 million (about Rs 196 crore) to the Floyd family to settle a civil lawsuit filed by the family in the case of the death of a black man in police custody, George Floyd.
The agreement comes at a time when the process of election of a jury to hear the case against a police officer accused of murder is underway.
The council members met the family privately to discuss the agreement and then held a public meeting to seal the payment of this hefty amount. This amount is more than the $ 20 million paid in the case of the murder of a white woman by the police two years ago.
The Floyd family’s lawyer, Ben Crump, called it the biggest settlement in a civil lawsuit and thanked city leaders for showing sensitivity to George Floyd. “The journey to justice is going to be long,” said Crump.
